Scripture: Matthew 6:34 (MSG): “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”
I’ve been pretty discontent for the past several months… Among the multitude of concerns pressing on my heart have been worries about my future. Looking for greener grass I’ve sought comfort in thoughts like: “Life will be better once this situation is over ” or “I’ll be so happy when A, B or C happens”.
In the midst of my dissatisfaction I’ve been neglecting the blessings of the present. Essentially operating with a downright ungrateful attitude and viewing my current circumstances with contempt and then reality hit—
I was caught off guard by two situations where two different loved ones had taken seriously ill in the same week. The mere thought of the possibility that something worse could happen to them severely frightened me and shook me to my core. As I fretted over their conditions, I worried what would happen tomorrow? The mere thought was more than I could handle. I realized those were ideas I simply could not entertain if I wanted to keep my sanity.
The Holy Spirit has been speaking to me for months now about the need to take one day at a time, but my loved ones illnesses really brought this point home. I cannot handle tomorrow.
My response to all of this?
I’m asking for grace as I’m learning to be content with what He’s given me and where He’s placed me. If you struggle with worrying about tomorrow- I want to encourage you to take comfort in the following as I’m learning to do…
Instead of focusing on tomorrow:
1.) Take Comfort in What He Says: Look at the truths and promises in the Word of God. The Bible is full of them! He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13: 5); He will work all things together for the good of those that love Him (Romans 8:28).
2.) Take Comfort in His Presence: Make it a point to spend regular time with Him and make sure there is nothing hindering your fellowship with Him (i.e. un-forgiveness, holding grudges, unrepented sin, etc.)
3.) Take Comfort in Your History With Him: Look over your life and be reminded of the faithfulness God has demonstrated and the goodness He has wrought in Your life. Be comforted with the truth that even when we are faithless, He remains faithful for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13).
Prayer: Lord, help us to not borrow from the sunshine of our tomorrows. Teach us how to give our entire attention to what you’re doing right now and give us grace to deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. Help us to remember that no matter what happens tomorrow you are in control.
There is an old hymn I really like called I know Who Holds Tomorrow that reminds us who holds all of our tomorrows. Here is the link if you want to check it out :I Know Who Holds Tomorrow
I hope this encouraged someone today!
